University of Zambia visit to UQ and IM4DC

A high level delegation from IM4DC partner, the University of Zambia visited The University of Queensland and IM4DC in June 2014.

The Vice Chancellor Professor S Simukanga, in the company of the Dean of the School of Mines Dr O Sikazwe, and the Head of the Department of Metallurgy and Mineral Processing Dr J Masinja, travelled to Brisbane to discuss opportunities for collaborative research and teaching.

IM4DC Deputy Director, Robin Evans, officially handed over training materials for a Mining Inspectorate course that has been conducted jointly between The University of Queensland and University of Zambia staff for Inspectors at the Mines Safety Department over the last two years. UNZA has now taken over the running of the courses fully, with one course to be conducted for Konkola Copper Mines in July/ August 2014.

The two universities discussed specific collaborative programs focused on the mining sector, including a proposal for a joint Virtual Mineral Research Centre (VMRC) involving the SMI-JKMRC and School of Mines at UNZA. Activities of the VMRC could include application of JKMRC optimization software in mineral processing in the Zambian mining industry, joint research in energy use optimization in the mining industry, and the impact of multiple mining projects on the environment.
