During January IM4DC Director Ian Satchwell addressed and held discussions with several international partners in Canada and Europe.
Ian met with the Board of the Canadian International Resources and Development Institute (CIRDI), and gave a short presentation on achieving impact and sustainability through institutional partnerships. He highlighted how building institutional capacity is a key part of the integrated program of IM4DC, and how this helps talented people to find greater traction for their skills. He said that IM4DC’s model also involves transferring capacity to other institutions so that they can continue to build capacity.

At the Annual Conference of the European Commission’s European Innovation Partnership (EIP) on Raw Materials (), Ian gave a presentation on Cooperation in strengthening mining governance capacity to achieve shared value and sustainable benefits. He highlighted the economic, social and business case for collaboration with resource-rich developing countries to build capacity in mining governance. He said that the strong shared interests and goals that exist between all stakeholders can underpin delivery of shared value, sustainability and preferred partner outcomes from resources development.

Ian also gave a video address to a Netherlands water sector workshop convened by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 13 January. Ian’s address discussed experience in management of water resources in Australia, mining’s interaction with water, and potential for collaborations between Dutch and Australian firms involved in water management around mining in countries around the world.

In Hanover, Germany, Ian met with the German geoscience agency BGR’s Department of International Cooperation to discuss development assistance cooperation with Australian universities in the field of mineral and energy resources. He participated in an arena discussion with German Government agencies, NGOs and universities about current and future international cooperation involving BGR.
