The major IM4DC activity in September is a study tour to Australia focused on the management of mine closure.
The Mine Closure two week program will involve a group of 15 to 20 representatives from governments and academic institutions from around the world.
The aim of this program is to provide an overview of key concepts, methods and case study examples of mine closure including regulatory approaches, mine covers, water management and key risk issues with important implications to mine closure.
The program will address both environmental and social aspects of closure from policy and technical viewpoints.
Commencing in Brisbane, program participants will attend the Seventh International Conference on Mine Closure, providing an opportunity to hear from and interact with representatives from government, industry and academia who are working in the area.
The group will then travel to Perth to partake in a short course, using case study examples to illustrate the points made. It will also include a short three day field trip in Western Australia to view current practice at several mining operations. Finally, a review and planning workshop will also be held to identify follow-up activities for participants to apply in their own contexts. Participants will be asked to deliver a brief presentation to the group on practice and legislation in their own country, and to develop a plan for further activity beyond the program.
Primarily targeted towards senior regulators with resource management accountability and environmental management and/ or monitoring focus and academics with a similar focus, the program will provide a good opportunity to develop a network with other government and academic representatives from a range of countries who are working in the same area.
The program will run from 24 September to 5 October 2012.
