A group of 25 participants from 11 countries in Africa are participating in an IM4DC course in Lusaka, Zambia, focused on practical and effective integration of geoscience, geographical and cadastral data in GIS systems.
The course is being hosted by The University of Zambia’s School of Mines, a partner in several IM4DC activities over the last twelve months.
The program is addressing the introduction and review of GIS in geology and environmental science, geographic analysis, remote sensing, spatial statistics, GIS data acquisition and storage, and GIS (geology) data standards.
The aims of the GIS systems course are to build capacity of participants:
- To understand principles of GIS and remote sensing
- To understand basic geographical analysis operations, coordinate systems, and data acquisition
- To understand the concept of spatial databases and spatial statistics
- To understand applications of GIS in geological mapping, environment monitoring, tenement management, geological risk assessment, and exploration targeting
- To understand geological and GIS open standards.
