African Resources Negotiation Network Roundtable – Development of Minerals Negotiation Training Manual

In May 2014, IM4DC will host a roundtable in Perth, Western Australia to continue the development of a Minerals Negotiation Training Manual and consolidate the work of the African Resources Negotiation Network (ARNN).

The event is built on the foundations of an inaugural roundtable held in Yaounde, Cameroon on 3 and 4 July in 2013, where 20 participants from across the African continent shared their knowledge and expertise, and brainstormed training and practitioner resources for negotiations in the mining industry.

At the first roundtable, it was established that despite varying and differing immediate needs for negotiation training and support, a Negotiation Training Manual that addressed negotiation content, negotiation process and negotiation skills would serve the training needs of the different stakeholders, and would provide a comprehensive product suitable for use in training courses conducted on a continental, sub-regional and national level.

The aim of the second roundtable is to develop the training manual through a ‘book sprint’ type of event with the outcome of producing a manual that will assist in the building of extractive industries negotiation capacity across the African continent.

The manual would include a negotiation training curriculum and courseware for adoption by tertiary and training institutions throughout Africa.

The manual will also include protocols for training and capacity development, lessons for mining content, aspects of negotiation (local and general), process awareness and preparation (including teams and process management) and communication, negotiation strategies, and negotiation skills development. In addition, teaching and training materials such as guidelines and checklists, case studies, role plays, skills and other negotiation activities, slides and debriefing questions, assessment templates and other items will be included in the training manual.

Attendance at this roundtable is by invitation.
